Agartala, Mar 17: The CPI-M faced a serious threat to its existence at the grassroots level, as elected members of CPI(M) and other Left Front constituents in various local bodies have started joining BJP .
In the process the CPI(M) received the biggest blow at Kakrachera ADC village of Mungiakami Block under Khowai sb-division where the party turned minority in the seven member Village Committee when four of its members joined BJP yesterday.
The CPI(M) was in power in this village committee since its inception and won all the seven seats in last election. The setback came when the four members Bapan Debbarma, Kanteswari Debbarma, Kalingjoy Reang and Hakun Chandra Reang joined BJP in a programme organized in the house of the newly elected MLA Dr Atul Debbarma.
The defectors said they were forced to work under an atmosphere of fear and decided to join the BJP. MLA Dr Debbarma assured them of a free hand and urged them to devote in development of their respective areas.
Similarly report received from Jirania and Jampuijala members in large numbers were submitting resignation while another good number was contacting the local BJP leaders for switching over. The same trend was witnessed in various urban local bodies too as at least three members in Udaipur and two in Sabroom had already submitted their resignation from their party and were on way to join BJP.
However, BJP vice-president Subal Bhowmik stated that the trend of shifting allegiance to ruling party was not a good sign and party leaders have been instructed to be cautious about entry into the party. UNI
