Kolkata,
Oct 6: The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has released a new app for
the local residents named ‘Bipad Sathi’. It is meant to help people in
distress. The app opens with a map covering the top half of the screen and
three options in the bottom half – Nearby Help, Track Me Live, Report a Crime.
The primary feature of the app is an SOS button, which is part of the nearby
Help section. The Bipad Sathi app has facilities to add mobile phone numbers of
up to five persons who can be contacted in the case of an emergency. Pressing
the button will send SMS to the five people as well as the local police station
in the commissionerate. The police, from any of the 10 police stations that are
a part of the commissionerate, will send GPS-enabled vehicles immediately. The
app will be of immense help especially for the elderly. Keeping in mind that
many people use earphones or headphones, the SOS button can be activated by
pressing the volume button thrice. The Track Me Live option, when activated –
if, for example, one feels unsafe while walking alone at night, or during any
other situation – will help the police to track the person using GPS, and if
necessary, reach the spot immediately, the reaction time being five to 10
minutes. The other section, Report a Crime, helps one to record a crime and
upload it on to the app for necessary action by the police. The app also helps
in seeking assistance from fire stations. UNI
