New Delhi, May 18: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to persuade Haryana to continue supplying same levels of water that it has been doing for the past 22 years.
In a letter, Mr Kejriwal apprised the Prime Minister as to how Delhi has been receiving 1,133 cusecs of water from Haryana since 1996. But for the first time after 22 years, Haryana has contested Delhi's right over this water and stopped it partially.
The Supreme Court had directed Haryana to supply earlier quantity of water till May 21 after Delhi Government approached it. The SC also asked the Delhi Government to approach the Upper Yamuna River Board for resolution of the issue, the Chief Minister said.
"Haryana could reduce water supply after May 21. If that happens it would create an unprecedented shortage of water in Delhi and could lead to serious law and order situation," Mr Kejriwal stated.
"I would urge you to kindly use your good offices to persuade Haryana to continue supplying same levels of water and not to disrupt it till the issue is finally decided by the courts," the Chief Minister said.
Mr Kejriwal has also urged Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to talk to Prime Minister and request his kind intervention in the matter.
On Thursday, the Chief Minister had written a letter to his Haryana counterpart, Manohar Lal Khattar on the same. UNI
