Lucknow, May 12: Outstanding dues of sugar mills are growing by the day in Uttar Pradesh with the arrears of cane farmers accumulating to Rs 1,1855.63 crore as on May 11.
Though in this 2017-18 season UP has crushed and produced record sugarcane and sugar respectively, low price of sugar in the market has given a blow to the mills which is said to be one of the reasons for such accumulated dues.
The total 119 sugar mills operative in the state has paid just 63.48 per cent of their total dues, though now 56 mills have closed their crushing.
The UP Sugar Mills Association (UPSMA) officials here on Saturday said the total dues of the cane farmers was Rs 11,855.63 crore of which 94 private mills has paid the most of Rs 10,727.37 crore.
The 24 cooperative mills too owe Rs 1107.09 crore and one corporation mill has to pay Rs 21.17 crore.
Surprisingly, the mills also have to pay Rs 59.59 crore to the cane farmers for the 2016-17 crushing season.
UPSMA said the mills have paid 20609.13 crore in the crushing season so far with the private mills paying Rs 18,864.96 crore, cooperative mills paid Rs 1663.31 crore and the single corporation mill paid Rs 80.88 crore to the cane farmers so far.
Meanwhile, UP has maintained the second spot in the production of sugar in the country after Maharashtra by producing 1163.08 lakh quintals of sugar with a recovery percentage of 10.88 by crushing 10688.83 lakh quintal of sugarcane in season so far.
With around half of the mills still crushing, hence the production would further increase. In the last season, the state produced 990.62 lakh quintal of sugar by crushing 9041.43 lakh quintal of sugarcane during the same period. UNI
