Srinagar, May 12: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was killed and a civilian injured in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) against militants in south Kashmir district of Pulwama.
A police spokesman said here Saturday that a joint search operation was launched by 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and 182 and 183 battalion CRPF at village Chinar Bagh Mohalla, Takiya, in Pulwama late last night following a tip-off about the presence of militants. However, when the security forces began searches in the village, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter.
A CRPF jawan J D Mandeep Kumar of 182 battalion and Bashir Ahmad owner of the house where the militants were hiding, were injured. 
He said that the area was immediately taken into cordon and the searches were intensified. However, militants taking advantage of the darkness fled from the spot. The operation was later called off in the early this morning.
The injured Kumar later succumbed while the condition of Bashir, who was hit in the shoulder, was stable. UNI
