Kolkata, May 12: Over 5000 people registered in the Chinese Education Expo 2018, and a total of ten MoUs were signed between the Chinese and Indian universities during the course of the event, Mr Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of China in Kolkata, told last night.
The MoUs signed cover student exchanges between the Chinese and Indian universities, he said in a phone-in interview. The two-day Education Expo ended yesterday.
The universities that signed the MoUs during the Expo include Jadavpur University, Techno India University, Seacom Engineering College, Beijing Construction University, Shaolin Martial Arts University among others, the CG said.
'During the Expo maximum queries were made for medicine, engineering, e-commerce and martial arts courses,' Mr Zhanwu said.
'Over 1000 Indian students studying in schools and colleges expressed interest in studying in Chinese universities in the coming months and years,' he added.
Mr Zhanwu said while a Chinese student was already doing Ph.D. in comparative literature at the city's Jadavpur University, four more are going to arrive in the coming weeks to study international relations and linguistics at the premier university as part of the existing student exchange programmes.
Asked about the cost of studying in the Chinese universities, the diplomat told UNI that while for some courses it could be as little as Rs 1 lakh for 3 years, the medical courses might cost Rs 2-3 lakhs per year.
Mr Zhanwu said the Chinese universities had a perception that India is a slow, backward country. 'But when they came here they were impressed and the idea changed. This is the first time that so many Chinese universities are here together in an Indian city to exhibit themselves,' he said.
As many as 62 Chinese universities offering 100 majors participated in the Expo.
The second Chinese Education Expo in Kolkata, which concluded yesterday, was organised at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre at Rajarhat, the first one being organised last year. UNI
