Guntur, May 4: A 55-year-old person, who is an accused of raping a 9-year-old girl, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at a forest area in Daida village of Gurajala mandal in this district on Friday.
Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Malakondaiah, addressing a press conference along with Deputy Chief Minister cum Home Minister N Chinarajappa at Dachepalli village this afternoon said the accused Subbaiah ended his life by hanging from a tree with his lungi. The DGP shown the image of the deceased hanging from the tree in his mobile phone.
The police got information that the accused told his relative on mobile phone that he had committed a 'big mistake' and decided to commit suicide. The police searched for him in river Krishna suspecting that he might have jumped into the river to end his life. However, at the same time they got information that he hanged himself from a tree. The body was shifted to the government general hospital for post-mortem.
Deputy Chief Minister said that the State government had announced Rs 5 lakh, local MLA Yerapathineni Srinivasa Rao announced Rs.2.50 lakh financial assistance personally to the girl. The government would also provide the family of the rape victim a house, Mr Chinarajappa said.
Meanwhile, the rape victim is undergoing treatment at the government general hospital here. The Deputy Chief Minister, YSRCP MLA R K Roja were among those who had visited the hospital and enquired about her condition with the doctors.
The DGP said that unfortunately 8 rape cases had taken place in Guntur district during the last five to six months. He said that awareness is being created to high school girl students through a short film on how to take care of them in Prakasam district. The concept would be implemented in other school across the state, he said. UNI
