Kolkata, May 4: A two-judge bench of Calcutta High Court today refrained from setting aside the State Election Commission’s fresh notification for filing nomination on April 23, but questioned the process it was maintaining to hold the Panchayat elections due on May 14.
The bench, headed by Justice Biswanath Samaddar, said the court is unhappy over the manner the commission is dealing with process for conducting the rural bodies polls.
"The commission’s role in the election procedures is not beyond question. The commission should have been more transparent in dealing with the affairs of holding the polls,” the bench observed.
The court said, it’s unfortunate what is happening and the commission has itself complicated the issue, creating confusion among the opposition political parties as well as voters.
The matter came before the high court scanner after the opposition Congress filed a writ petition challenging the fresh notification issued by the commission on April 21 extending the date for filing nomination on April 23.
In its petition, the Congress said the way notification was issued was “illegal.” UNI
