Thane, May 12: The Thane city police on Saturday claimed to have busted a major ATM racket and arrested six people in connection with duping of account holders and siphoning off their monies.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday evening, Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime Mukund Hatote told mediapersons that acting on a tip-off, the police personnel of the Crime Unit V Wagle led by Inspector Jairaj Ranware laid a trap at Naigaon on the Mumbai Ahmedabad highway on May 10.
Upon interrogation, the arrested revealed that they indulged in hacking the ATM machines and stealing the pin codes and siphoning of the money from the account of the account holders. They kept a watch at the ATM centres and under the pretext of helping the visitors, stole their PIN codes which later used to withdraw the monies.
The police said that the six have been booked under offence registered with the Varatak Nagar police station under sections 420,406 rw34 of the IPC.
They indulged in similar crimes in Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Sahapur, Sahapur, Nalla Sopara, Vasai, Virar, Mumbra, Kopri, Panvel, Padgha and Dahisar in the similar manner and hacked the ATMs.
A verification of the records of the arrested revealed that they had indulged in the similar crimes in Thane Naupada, Chitalsar, Mumbra, Bhiwandi, Narpoli, Shantinagar and Tulinj, Virar. They were also involved in crimes in Navghar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Sahapur, Naya Nagar where a total of 26 such offences are registered.
The arrested are-- Amitabh @ Aftab Jahir Alam Khan, 28, Santosh Omprakash Giri, 38, Kaesh Yadav,27, Vijay Pandey,48, Alok Singh, 30 and Ahmed Hussain Khan, 24.
The police have recovered as many as 13 debit cards of different banks from their possession.
The police also said that further interrogation of the accused revealed that offences have been registered against Aftab with the police stations at Devgaon, Azamgadh, Sidhari, Mubarakpur, Jalalpur and Jounpur of UP earlier.
A total of six offences have been registered against him and currently, he was out on bail. Similarly, offences have been registered against giri with Fulpur Kotwarli police station of UP all offences regarding the ATM fraud.
Additionally Giri used to work as a Producer Manager at the Film City and into providing of vanity van, catering, and other services of boys, including light boys for the shootings.
According to a conservative estimate, so far, the gang had duped the account holders to the tune of around Rs 10-12 lakhs, the police said. UNI
