Lucknow, Apr 3: Situation in the trouble-torn western Uttar Pradesh which witnessed large scale violence during the Bharat Bandh to protest against Supreme Court's directive on SC/ST Act, was peaceful on Tuesday.
At least two people-- one each in Muzaffarnagar and Meerut-- were killed in the violence, while more than 50 people were injured. Police has claimed that over 500 people were arrested for violence in the state with around 200 alone in Meerut.
However, unofficial said that the death toll in the state yesterday rose to 3 with one more death reported from Ferozabad.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, schools and colleges except those conducting board examinations, remained shut in parts of west UP in the wake of violent protests by Dalit groups.
Schools and colleges remained closed in Agra, Hapur, Ghaziabad and Meerut on Tuesday. In Meerut, no classes were held from Class 1 till degree college for a day on Tuesday. The board exams of class 10 and 12 along with the university exams will, however, be conducted as scheduled.
Internet services have been suspended in Meerut till 1400 hrs on Tuesday as a precautionary measure, to prevent spread of rumour.
ADG ( Law and Order) Anand Kumar said here on Tuesday that the situation was fast turning normal in the violence-hit areas.
"Police was identifying the people involved in the violence and strict action would be taken against them," he said.
Mr Kumar said additional security forces have been rushed in the sensitive areas, while patrolling have been intensified.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also asked the district magistrates to take strict action against those involved in violence which results in loss of property and life.
"Take action against those who unleashed terror on the streets of the state on the name of opposition to the Supreme Court order on SC/ST Act. These criminals should be punished," the Chief Minister said in a written statement here on late Monday night.
He also asked the DMs to evaluate the loss of private property that was set on fire during protest and send the same to the government.
"The BJP is committed to the welfare of the Dalits. The Union government has filed a review petition against the court order. We will ensure that no injustice is done to Dalit," he said.
Yesterday violence erupted in parts of UP as protesters attacked shops, looted some and pelted stones at police in Hapur, Agra, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad, Ghaziabad, Azamgarh, Saharanpur and other districts.
Maximum violence in the state was reported from western UP, where the protesters took to the streets and went on a rampage. 
More than 500 people, including a former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator, have been arrested. Many cars were targeted and their window panes smashed. At some places, government property was targeted. 
Some people reportedly fired at a police team in Meerut while a passenger bus was set on fire. 
Also in Meerut, over 500 Dalit youths targeted the media and broke their cameras as they were trying to photograph the protests. UNI
