Srinagar, Apr 11: Train service was again suspended on Wednesday for security reasons in south Kashmir, where a fierce encounter broke out between militants and security forces during a search operation since late late Tuesday night in Kulgam.
'We have again suspended train service in south Kashmir, while it was running smoothly in the north Kashmir,' a senior railway official told.
He said a fresh advisory was received early this morning from police to suspend train service in south Kashmir for security reasons.
Therefore, he said, no train will run on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region.
This was the sixth time train service was suspended in south Kashmir for security reasons this month.
Trains will run as per schedule on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir, he added.
'We are acting on the advice of police and civil administration,' railway official said, adding that the decision to suspend train service was being taken for the security and safety of passengers and railway property.
Railway property has suffered massive damage in the past due to stone pelting and other violence during protests in the valley. However, railway remained first choice of people travelling between Baramulla in north to Banihal via south as it is being considered cheap, fast and safe. Last year, train service remained suspended for 50 times partially or fully in the valley. UNI
