Srinagar, Apr 3: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said in the
light of some people tweeting to tell him that the news report
appearing in a Delhi newspaper about the attack on tourists in Srinagar was
fake, he is deleting the tweet.
A police official said tourists were not attacked in Kashmir.
'We are looking into reports of stone pelting on tourist buses,' he added.
The Director Tourism, Kashmir also rejected reports that tourists were attacked in Srinagar. "We confirmed with different police stations and all stake holders but no such incident has taken place," he said.
Mr Abdullah, who is very active on Twitter, uploaded a screenshot of a news report published in ‘Times of India’ captioned ‘Stone pelters attack tourists in J&K, 4 hurt’. Along with the screenshot, Mr Abdullah wrote, 'Theses stone-pelters are no friends or well-wishers of Kashmiris. They deserve to face the weight of law.'
However, soon after facing criticism from the twitterites, who claimed that it was fake news, the former CM deleted the tweet. 'In light of some people tweeting to tell me the Times of India story datelined from Srinagar was “Fake News” I’m deleting the tweet,' Mr Abdullah, who is the working president of National Conference, wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
'I’ve deleted it for the time being but if this is really fake news let’s see an acceptance of the same & a retraction of the story on the front of tomorrow’s Times of India. I’ll happily tweet a photo of that also. Now retweet this as well,' Mr Abdullah wrote in response to a tweet by Secretary J&K State Sports Council Waheed-Ur-Rehman Parra.
'Sad you prefer to promote a news that's baseless, insulting and defaming/maligning the image of whole Kashmiris,' Mr Parra said.
That having been, Mr Abdullah said, 'I tweeted a story from the front page of the Delhi edition of one of India’s most trusted newspapers, not some rag that makes a living from gossip & lies.' UNI
