Dharwad (Karnataka), Apr 13: The “Dhongi Baba (pseudo religious) politics” of BJP has frustrated Hindus in Karnataka and this is one major reason that will lead to the success of Congress in the coming elections, Karnataka Geology and Mines Minister Vinay Kulkarni has said here.
“The BJP earlier won Hindu votes by talking about Hindutva issues and committing for Hindu renaissance. Now it is all about Dhongi Baba politics. Hindus have been frustrated and that is why Congress will do well in the elections,” Mr Kulkarni told.
Taking a break from his hectic electioneering, Mr Kulkarni maintained that the effective implementation of the welfare schemes of the Siddaramaiah government and its firm commitment to secularism would ensure success of Congress candidates in the Dharwad district and also the rest of the state.
Answering questions, he said in his district like others, job is another major issue before the electorate. But he maintained when it comes to employment related issues, the people are more “frustrated” with the BJP. “BJP had promised four crore jobs. In last four years, they probably created hardly a four lakh jobs,” he said.
On farm distress in the region, he said the Congress government has taken adequate steps to help people solve their problems.“We are in the process of marketing amenities for the farmers,” he remarked.
Mr Kulkarni said that in fact “secularism and communal harmony” are important facets of his electioneering this year and all secular-minded people need to come together and defeat the “communal forces” from the district to the national level. “Therefore, we say, Congress has to come back to power in Karnataka,” he said.
He dismissed suggestion that Lingayat voters could tilt the balance in favour of BJP and said in 2013, both KJP (floated by B S Yeddyurappa) and BJP could poll only 34,000 votes.
“In 2013, I had polled 53453 votes as against 35,000 by my nearest rival from JD(S). This time too I am going confident into the fray,” he said.
Five years back Amrut Ayyappa Desai of JD(S) had finished second in the election. However, in 2008, Vinay Kulkarni was humbled by BJP’s Seema Ashok Masuti.
However, earlier this month Ms Masuti resigned from the party and announced that she would
contest as an Independent from Dharwad constituency.
BJP sources make light of her rebellion and say in 2013 the former MLA (Masuti) had polled only about 16,000 votes. "Instead this time, we have a formidable candidate in Amrut Ayyappa Desai, who belongs to Sadar Lingayat. This caste group has formidable presence in Dharwad," says BJP worker in the town Rajiv Tavanappa. UNI
