Apr 2: Violent protests today left two people dead in Madhya Pradesh
during the Bharat Bandh called against the recent Supreme Court ruling
"diluting" the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and the Scheduled
Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced to file a review petition against the apex court ruling. He urged public to maintain calm. The Chief Minister held a meeting with ministers and senior officials and reviewed the situation. The Centre has already filed a review petition in the Supreme Court today.
In Morena, a 20-year-old youth was standing outside his house during the protest when miscreants opened fire and a bullet hit him. He was rushed to hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. His kin gheraoed the Collectror's residence and demanded registering of a murder case against the accused. Curfew was clamped in the Morena district headquarters following the incident.
There are reports of a protester dying of gunshot wounds in firing in Bhind district's Lahar. It is not clear who fired the gunshot.
Protests in Morena, Bhind and Gwalior were marked by incidents of firing, arson and stone-pelting. Clashes erupted in Sagar when bandh supporters forced shops to shut down. Protesters blocked National Highway-92 in Bhind in the morning resulting in several vehicles being stuck on both sides.
The bandh evoked mixed response in Indore, Seoni, Ratlam, Ujjain, Jhabua, Shivpuri, Sheopur and Jabalpur with incidents of clashes between bandh supporters and businessmen. Police used mild force and drove trouble mongers at a few places. The bandh did not evoke much response in Bhopal, Jabalpur, Umariya, Betul and other districts.
Several policemen, including a City Superintendent of Police, were injured in stone-pelting in Morena. A media person was injured during stone-pelting near railway tracks. Protesters blocked railway tracks affecting traffic.
Prohibitory orders were imposed in Gola Ka Mandir, Vishwavidyalaya and Murar police station limits of Gwalior following incidents of violence. Two people were injured in firing by bandh supporters while trying to force the shops to shut down in Murar. Vehicles were set ablaze by agitators.
Likewise, prohibitory orders were also placed in Sagar as a precautionary measure as protests started turning violent. Band supporters vandalised vehicles, looted a liquor shop and forced shops to shut down leading to clashes with shopkeepers. Police were forced to lob tear gas shells and drive away protesters. UNI
