New Delhi, Mar 22: World Water Day is being observed the world over as an international day to renew the pledge to save and conserve water for humanity.
This year’s theme is Nature-based Solutions to water problems especially efforts to overcome challenges of climate change which is driving water-related crisis reflected in frequent floods, drought and water pollution, degraded vegetation, soil, rivers and lakes.
Nature-based solutions have the potential to solve many of our water challenges and improving the supply and quality of water and reducing the impact of natural disasters, said the 2018 edition of the United Nations World Water Development Report presented by Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO at the 8th World Water Forum in Brazil earlier this week.
The report that preceded World Water Day celebrations, argues that reservoirs, irrigation canals and water treatment plants are not the only water management instruments at our disposal but nature-based solutions have a major role to play as well.
It mentions examples of nature-based works done in India and China to revive water structures and rivers.
While warning that India may be facing a potential risk of water shortages, the report suggests natural solutions—rather than mega dams—to handle water crises and calls for indigenous solutions. UNI
