Kolkata, Mar 27: The Urdu Academy has demanded more government advertisements to sustain and nurture Urdu journalism.
'Urdu is accepted as a language of class and should be treated as such. If the government wants that the language should grow Urdu newspapers should be given maximum advertising,' Academy Chairman S Haider said at a function here yesterday which marked the completion of 200 years of Urdu Journalism in West Bengal.
Mr Haider also demanded proper training of those interested in Urdu journalism. The Masters level should be part of the journalism courses, he added.
On this occasion a special bicentennial stamp was issued. The conference was held by 'The Urdu Academy All India Urdu Editors'.
Mr Haider further said Urdu journalism began in Kolkata in 1922 with the publication of 'Jam Numa'.
Urdu newspapers and magazines brought out special issues on the occasion.
The event was attended by United News of India's Editor-in chief Ashok Upadhyay on Sunday who pitched for accuracy and objectivity in news reporting. UNI
