Lucknow, Mar 23: Almost all of the opposition MLAs including 17 of the BSP and 7 of the Congress
have voted in the Rajya Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh in the first one and a half
hour of the polling on Friday.
However, of the two defectors Anil Singh of the BSP and Nitin
Agarwal of the SP, Anil Singh has voted in favour of BJP candidate.
"I have voted for BJP, I don't know about the rest: Anil Singh said after coming out from the polling booth.
Nitin Agarwal too has voted for the BJP. Both the MLAs had attended the BJP dinner and had announced to cast their vote in favour of the BJP.
Around 50 per cent of the total 400 votes have been polled so far, election office sources here said.
UP assembly members will elect 10 candidates for the Rajya Sabha in this elections in which 11 candidates, nine of the BJP and one each of SP and BSP were trying their luck. The polling will end at 1600 hours and counting of votes would start at 1700 hours.
BSP has made senior party leader Satish Chandra Mishra as his poll agent while Shailendra Yadav of the SP is the polling agent ,state parliamentary affairs minister Suresh Kumar Khanna is the polling agent of the ruling BJP.
SP's Shivpal Singh Yadav was the first among the opposition members to cast vote in the RS polls early in the morning at 0900 when the polling commenced.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is not eligible to vote as he is the member of the legislative council, reached the assembly to monitor the voting at 0930 hours while most of the eight candidates of the BJP were stationed at the BJP headquarters just opposite the assembly.
Of the total 403 eligible voters in the RS polls, one seat is vacant due to the death of a BJP member while two MLAs, Mukhtar Ansari of the BSP and Hariom of SP would not be able to vote as they are in jail.
However, there are reports that Independent MLAs Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya and another Saroj Kumar could not come to vote. Raja Bhaiyya and Saroj had attended the dinner of the SP.
BJP has 324 members including its alliance partners in the assembly and can easily win 8 seats. Opposition are supporting the BSP candidates but it lacks in the number along with the ninth BJP candidate.
Candidates would require to get 37 votes in the first preference to win the elections. UNI
