Agartala, March 27: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb sought blessing from Bangladesh
Prime Minister Sheikh Hassina for serving the state better and strengthening
bilateral relation between two countries.
Addressing a function organized by Deputy High Commission of
Bangladesh here last evening on the occasion of Bangladesh Independence and
National Day, Deb said people of Tripura are indebted to Bangladesh government
for their support to development activities of the state and allowing
transshipment and transit through their country.
“In the first meeting about a year ago as president of BJP state committee in Dhaka, I found her motherly and her affection to Tripura is beyond any expression of letters. The biggest clean development power project of 726 MW at Palatana in South Tripura was possible only because of Hassina who had allowed transshipment of over dimensional cargos through their waterways and roads,” Deb said.
He pointed out that pro-active action of Hassina government against anti-Indian elements and flush out operation against the insurgents of northeast reflected her good neighborhood attitude. Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated multi-pronged action plan to further strengthen bilateral relation of trade, commerce, cultural and communication, which is equally reciprocated by Bangladesh, he stated.
The celebration began on March 25 night, with a candlelight gathering to commemorate the martyrs who were massacred on March 25, 1971. Bangladesh's Deputy High Commission in Tripura is the second diplomatic mission in northeast India after Guwahati to organise the series of programmes to commemorate the day.
Besides, Chairman of University of Grants Commission of Bangladesh Prof Abdul Mannan, and veteran journalist of Tripura Pradip Datta Bhowmik, among others, addressed the session and remembered the role of the state and the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the liberation war of Bangladesh.
Days after the Pakistani forces unleashed attacks across Bangladesh, the then east Pakistan's leaders vowed to win their independence on March 26, 1971. Bangabandhu Mujibur Rehman, father of Hassina launched a guerilla war against the then Pakistani rulers.
The Liberation War later turned into a full-scale India-Pakistan War, leading to the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in Dhaka on December 16, 1971. India was the first country to recognise Bangladesh as a sovereign nation.
In the nine months long Liberation War from March 26 to December 16, 1971 over 3 million Bengali-speaking people, including children were killed and over 6 lakh women were raped, forcing more than a crore families to leave their ancestral homes and take shelter in India. UNI
