New Delhi, Mar 23: The Supreme Court on Friday sought a detailed response within two weeks from 13
states and Union Territories, including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Jammu &
Kashmir and Delhi, for not appointing the Lokayuktas.
A division bench of the apex court, headed by
Justice Ranjan Gogoi, directed the 13 respective Chief Secretaries of states to
file detailed affidavits in the issue within two weeks and apprise the court
about it.
The court was hearing a petition filed by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, seeking expeditious appointment of Lokayuktas in those states, in which these posts were lying vacant.
Mr Upadhyay sought a direction from the SC, claiming that the Lokayuktas have not been appointed in many states since a long time and the same should be expeditiously appointed.
The other states, from which the SC sought replies, include Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Puducherry, Sikkim, Tripura Telangana and Uttarakhand. UNI
