Mar 31: The untimely rain, accompanied by heavy gales and hailstorm,
created havoc at the famous Kodanda Rama Swamy temple at Vontimitta, about 25
KM from here, killing four devotees and injuring about 40, six of them
seriously, last night.
The Thirumala Thirupathi Devastanam (TTD) is organising Kodandarama Swamy
Brahotsavalu at the Rama temple. As part the Brahmotsavam, Sitarama Kalyanam
(celestial wedding) was solemnized at around 9 PM last night. One hour before
the solemnization of celestial wedding, heavy rain accompanied by massive gales
and hailstorm lashed the area, pulling down the pandals, damaging decorations,
blown off roofs of sheds. At the same time, power went off due to short circuit
causing panic among devotees.
Thousands devotes, who thronged the temple to witness the sacred celestial wedding, panicked and fled helter skelter. Collapse of asbestos sheds killed two persons Chennayya, belonged to Badvel town, China Vengayya belonged to Porumamilla village, in two incidents, a woman devotee Meena, belonged to Machilipatnam town electrocuted and Subbamma after seeing the panicky situation suffered cardiac arrest and died, she belonged to Vontimitta village. As the condition of six of the injured is critical, they were shifted to Tirupati for better treatment.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who went there yesterday to participate at the Kodanda Rama Kalyanam visited the injured persons at the RIMS hospital and announced Rs.15 lakh compensation to the bereaved family and Rs.3 lakh to the injured. The Chief Minister inquired the doctors about the condition of the injured and directed him provide them best treatment. Mr.Naidu was in the hospital till midnight last night.
However, the Chief Minister couple presented silk robes to the presiding deities last night and participated at the celestial wedding. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister expressed anger over the officials for making such poor arrangements. Official sources said that the Chief Minister reprimanded the officials concerned for failure in taking precautions. The Chief Minister last night visited collapsed arches and pandal. He held a meeting with district officials and minister on Saturday and reviewed the situation. The Chief Minister directed officials to construct mandapam on permanent basis to solemnize the sacred celestial wedding. UNI
