New Delhi, Mar 28: Amid severe criticism of the government for allegedly diluting provisions of law required for protection of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, a NDA delegation of Members of Parliament including Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Wednesday.
The delegation also comprising Union Minister for Social Justice Thawarchand Gehlot discussed with Prime Minister on the recent Supreme Court ruling reportedly 'diluting' the provisions of the SC-ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.
"It was a good meeting," Mr Paswan later told reporters.
He also said there was elaborate discussion with Prime Minister on the matter.
"Prime Minister gave us a patient hearing and heard issues raised by us and our concerns," said Mr Paswan, who is the chief of Bihar-based LJP.
The Supreme Court on March 20 said that the arrest of an accused under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act,1989, is not mandatory and recourse to coercive action can be necessary only after preliminary inquiry and sanction by the competent authority.
The apex court took cognizance of the rampant misuse of the stringent Act against government servants.
The Social Justice Minister Mr Gehlot recently wrote to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad seeking a review plea against the Supreme Court
order.
Mr Prasad recently said that the Ministry will form its opinion on the matter only after studying the apex court order in details. UNI
