Kolkata, Mar 24: The Lok Prasar Prakalpa, a brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has
helped immensely in reviving folk culture in Bengal.
One of the project’s beneficiaries is the folk art of Howrah
district, known as Kalikapatari.
This folk theatre is indigenous to Howrah district, specially Shyampur, where it has received a fresh lease of life, thanks to the State Government scheme.
A mixture of acting and dancing, this art form tells stories from the Puranas and the epics.
Currently there are three groups, comprising a total of 50 artistes, that perform Kalikapatari in Shyampur, and they are thriving. Each of the three groups consists of 15 to 20 people.
The artistes receive regular stipends and also get invited to perform in various places.
It may be mentioned that, at present, 1.94 lakh folk artistes are registered under the Lok Prasar Prakalpa, and receive monthly stipends from the Government.
They also perform at various Government functions. UNI
