New Delhi, Mar 27: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) O P Rawat on Tuesday said the poll panel will
probe and take appropriate action into the alleged 'leak' of the election
schedule for Karnataka before the formal announcement of the same by the
Commission.
"Certain things might have been leaked for which the
Election Commission will take appropriate action," Mr Rawat told reporters
when asked about a reported tweet from BJP's IT Cell head Amit Malviya
disclosing the dates of Karnataka Assembly polls before the actual announcement
of the poll schedule. The CEC said the Commission will look into the matter of
alleged leak.
"The issue of leak will be probed. Be assured a befitting action will be taken," he said.
Much before the poll dates were announced, in a rare display of excitement, the BJP IT cell chief is said to have written in the micro blogging site: "Karnataka will vote on 12 May 2018, counting on 18 May 2018".
Mr Malviya's posting created immediate buzz in the social media with several media persons questioning the 'authenticity' of the information.
"EC has not announced yet, how do you know Amit?" one net savvy journalist tweeted.
The Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala also wasted no time to take a potshot at the ruling party.
"BJP becomes the 'Super Election Commission' as they announce poll dates for Karnataka even before the EC. Credibility of EC is on test," he tweeted and wanted to know whether the poll panel will issue notice to the BJP president Amit Shah.
However, it should be noted that while Mr Malviya claimed that counting of votes will be taken up on May 18, the actually poll schedule by the EC shows May 15 as the date of counting.
Elections will be held on May 12. UNI
