New Delhi, Mar 6: Amid TDP mounting pressure on the Centre demanding a new railway zone in Andhra Pradesh, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) said on Tuesday that the party will demand three new divisions in Odisha and will press for them in the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament.
'We will take up the issue seriously and also meet Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in this connection,' BJD floor leader in the Lok Sabha Bhartruhari Mahtab told UNI.
He said three new railway divisions should come up at Rourkela, Rayagada and Jajpur-Keonjhar Road under the jurisdiction of East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone.
The demand from the ruling party in Odisha assumes significance as the Andhra Pradesh government and NDA ally TDP are aggressively seeking a new railway zone and Waltair Division may go under it.
'In the light of the demands from TDP, we also feel all railway links in Odisha should come under one zone,' he said.
It has been a long-standing demand to bifurcate Chakradharpur Division (in Jharkhand) of South Eastern Railway (SER) and carve out a new railway division under ECoR at the industrial hub of Rourkela comprising Odisha’s three industrial and mining districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Jharsuguda.
Mr Mahtab said the party will also press for early setting up of a tribunal on Mahanadi in tune with the Supreme Court judgement in January.
The party has already given notice for adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on the issue, he said.
He maintained that under the provisions of Article 256 of the Constitution, the Central Government can direct the Chhattisgarh government to stop construction of barrages -- which are harming the interest of Odisha. UNI
