Srinagar, Feb 10: Train service resumed on Saturday after remaining suspended on Friday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatists had called for a general strike on the 5th death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
'We have resumed train service in the Kashmir valley after receiving a fresh advisory from the police last night', a railway official told this morning.
He said no train operated in the Kashmir valley yesterday for security reasons.
However, trains will run between Badgam-Srinagar to Anantnag, Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region on Saturday as per schedule. Similarly train will chug on Srinagar-Badgam to Baramulla in north Kashmir, he added.
This is eleventh time the train service was suspended in the Kashmir valley partially or fully during this year so far. Last year the train service was suspended for more than 50 times, fully or partially, for security reasons.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), consisting of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik, had called for a strike yesterday in the valley.
The official said railway authorities are acting on the advice of police and administration. However, he admitted it is the passengers who are facing difficulties when the train service remained suspended.
'We expect more rush of passengers, particularly in the afternoon as people are going to their homes because of Sunday tomorrow, he said adding similarly Monday morning also witness rush when people resume their work.
Train service has become very popular in the valley as it is being considered fast, safe and cheap against other mode of transport.
Railway property suffered heavy damage due to demonstration and protests in the past. In 2016 summer unrest train service remained suspended for more than six months. UNI
