Srinagar, Feb 17: Train service remained suspended on Saturday for security reasons in the
Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike against
shifting of detenues from central jail, Srinagar and killing of Hurriyat
Conference (HC) leader by unidentified gunmen.
We have suspended train service in the Kashmir valley
following fresh advisory received from police last night, a railway official
told.
He said on Friday similar advisory was received to suspend train service between Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north following encounter between militants and security forces at Palhalan, Pattan. However, trains in south Kashmir were running normally on Friday, he added.
Train service from Baramulla in north Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region will remain suspended on Saturday, he said.
The official said that there will be no train on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region. Similarly no train will chug for the second day today in north Kashmir, he said.
We witness heavy rush of passengers on Saturday, particularly in the afternoon when people are returning to their homes to avail Sunday holiday.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik have called for a strike today against shifting of detenues from here to other jails in Jammu and outside the state, killing of HC leader Mohammad Yousuf Nadeem by unidentified gunmen in central Kashmir district of Badgam and recent Supreme court order staying action against army personnel allegedly involved in the firing incident in Shopian in which three persons were killed.
He said railway department is acting on the advice of police for the safety and security of passengers and railway property.
Over a dozen times train service had been suspended partially or fully in the Kashmir valley for security reasons. Last year more than 50 times the train service remained suspended.
Train service has become very popular in the Kashmir valley as it is being considered cheap, fast and safe.
However, during 2016 railway suffered loss of crores of rupees after demonstrators damaged rail property besides due to cancellation of train service for about six months due to summer unrest. UNI
