Srinagar, Feb 2: Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed on Friday to foil 'Shopian Chalo' called by separatists against death of civilians in security force firing in south Kashmir during the past two weeks.
All roads leading to Shopian have been closed and 'nakas' set up at different places to prevent people from entering the main town, where the separatists had announced to hold a rally after Friday prayers.
Meanwhile, authorities have suspended train service in the Kashmir valley on Friday for security reasons, while the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) department has postponed interviews which were scheduled to be held today.
Internet mobile service remained suspended in Shopian and Pulwama districts for the past over a week.
The District Magistrate (DM), Shopian said that restrictions have been imposed on the movement of public and transport in the territorial limits of district Shopian on Friday under Section 144 CrPC.
The restrictions shall not be applicable to essential services including banks, he said.
However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as security forces and state police personnel were directing people to remain indoors. Repeated announcements were being made directing people not to violate restrictions, official source said.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising separatists Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, has called for “Shopian Chalo” to express solidarity with the families of civilians who died in Shopian district during the past two weeks. The JRL has announced that joint Friday prayers would be held at Jamia Masjid followed by a rally.
However, large number of state police and central paramilitary forces, braving chill because of fresh snowfall in the heights, have been deployed around the Jamia masjid to prevent people from assembling there.
All roads leading to masjid have been closed with barbed wire and by parking bullet proof vehicles to foil any attempt by people from nearby village to enter there. UNI
