New Delhi, Feb 8: Opposition Congress on Thursday tore holes in the Union Budget for 2018-19 as a
'chaunawi jumla', terming the newly-announced National Health Protection Scheme
of insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh as the 'biggest jumla' of them all.
Initiating the discussion on the Union Budget for 2018-19 in
the Rajya Sabha amid shouting by ruling BJP members who had gathered in the
aisle, an unfazed Chidambaram said the Union Budget which was a roadmap for for
the year ahead, did not mention 'a word about education, jobs and agriculture.
The budget debate began on a rancorous note with the Opposition slamming the BJP for its continuing protest against the Congress members for the happenings of the Lok Sabha yesterday after a brief 10-minute adjournment cooled down tempers and allowed for the discussion to begin despite the ruling party protests.
He poured water over the Government's claims of a reviving economy saying 'we are the only country that claims that the jobs have gone down but the GDP has gone up.
Slamming the Centre on the employment projections made, Mr Chidambaram stated 'This must be the only country in the world where GDP falls and employment increases...What kind of jumla is this?' to table thumping by his party colleagues.
Attacking the Government claims made in this regard, he asked 'where have all the jobs gone?' before pointing to the sources of employment for 75,000 across various sectors, particularly in the health and security sectors in the Delhi Government.
The former Finance Minister told the Rajya Sabha that that the burdern of taxation had fallen on the middle class while the corporate sector had got major tax waiver, saying 'the NDA government believes that we must tax the hard-working middle class rather than the rich corporates?' UNI
