New Delhi, Feb 9: Emphasising the role of country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s contribution towards nation building and creating a scientific temperament among the people, former President Pranab Mukjerjee said all the Prime Ministers have contributed to promote science and technology in the country.
Releasing a book, ‘A Contribution in Time- India’s Electronics Revolution’, by former Union Minister M M Pallam Raju and his brother Anand Mallupudi on the life of their father and former union minister for Electronics and chairman of the Electronics Commission MS Sanjeevi Rao, on Thursday evening at Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Mr Mukherjee said earlier the leaders emphasised on higher education in science and it has led to the establishment of IITs, NITs and many IISCs.
“Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru throughout his life, not only just as the Prime Minister, but his whole life, emphasised on creating scientific temperament among the common people,” he said at the function which was attended by Congress bigwigs including former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, leaders like AK Antony, Anand Sharma, HR Bharadwaj, Ambika Soni, Shashi Tharoor, Andra Pradesh Congress Committee president N Raghuveera Reddy and CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.
Mr Mukherjee said, India has now 753 universities, 16 IITs, 30 NITs and scores of IISCERs.
“Pandit Nehru established the Atomic Energy Commission and India became a nuclear power and under the prime ministership of Manmohan Singh it was recognised internationally as a nuclear power", he said.
He said the country was fortunate that all the prime ministers of the country, starting from Pandit Nehru, particularly Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Dr Manmohan Singh and others have also contributed to the development of science and technology.
Remembering Sanjeevi Rao’s contributions, the former President said, “I have worked with Rao in the Cabinet and in the Government. He was at the forefront of development of technology.”
Mr Mukherjee added that "these days politicians realise winning elections is difficult. But there was a time when Mr Rao won elections with huge margins, and once he was elected unopposed".
He also said that today’s politicians should learn from Mr Rao how to connect with the people. Mr Rao connected with the people in his constituency at a time when mobile phones and internet services did not exist, Mr Mukherjee pointed out. UNI
