Kolkata, Feb 17: The West Bengal Government’s Food and Supplies Department is going to set up
fair price shops (FPS) in 303 tea gardens.
In fact, quite a few have already been set up.
The work would be completed by March.
Self-help groups (SHG), comprising entirely of women, will run the shops.
A model fair price shop has already been set up at Karala Valley Tea Garden in Jalpaiguri district.
The cost of construction of each set of shop and warehouse is Rs 9.46 lakh.
The district magistrates are identifying the land required for the project, near the main entrance of each tea plantation.
Alongside the shops will be a warehouse for each.
In Jalpaiguri district, the construction of shops and warehouses in 50 of the 87 tea gardens is over.
Workers and non-workers and their families would be able to get rice and other foodgrains at a rate of Rs two per kg per person. UNI
