Manu (Tripura), Feb 5: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and his party have targeted BJP's tie
up with "anarchists" Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) as against
BJP attacking the Chief Minister for presiding over a regime that has been
responsible for deteriorating law and order and a number of corruption cases.
Addressing a rally at Manu Bazar in support of CPI M
candidate Umakant Tripura for Karmachhara scheduled tribe reserved seat, Mr
Sarkar flayed BJP for forging an alliance with the IPFT group saying the
saffron party has tied with a group which wants to spark off anarchy in the
state.
Other CPI (M) leaders who have been campaigning in North Tripura district that comprises key political hubs like Dharmanagar and Kumarghat also blast at saffron's party's alliance with the tribal group.
"There is a close nexus between IPFT and country's ruling party BJP. The saffron party and their so called good governance leaders ought to explain why they are with a party that tried to trigger anarchy in Tripura through indefinite blockade of state's lifeline - the national highway and even the railway lines," complains Tushar Bhadra, a local CPI (M) block level leader at Kumarghat.
In the run up to the February 18 polls, the battle lines have been drawn and there is expectation of a 'fierce contest' between CPI(M) which is in power since 1993 and the BJP - which has been hoping to unseat the Left Front from their renowned citadel.
In many political rallies and roadside meetings, the communist leaders are only trying to talk about BJP's attempts to play up 'divisiveness' and "creating an atmosphere of ethnic strife".
In Karmachhara assembly segment, BJP has fielded Divya Charan Hrangkhwal. This is a traditional Congress stronghold seat as grand old party had won it in 2013. But BJP claims a large number of Congress workers and supporters have joined the saffron party this year.
The BJP leaders in Manu-Dharmanagar belt in North Tripura as also in the rest of the state are attacking Manik Sarkar for presiding a regime that has failed to live up to the expectation of the people. "Even after being Chief Minister for four terms, Mr Sarkar has failed to be a Chief Minister of the entire 37 lakh population state. He has been a Chief Minister only for his cadres," says Biplab Kumar Deb, state unit BJP chief.
Speaking in similar vein, Bishwabandhu Sen, a former Congress legislator and now BJP candidate from prestigious commercial town of Dharmanagar, says, "Manik Sarkar has failed on twin fronts of law and order and a clean administration. His ministers have been involved in corruption cases. On several occasions, he protected them. Instead of backing his cabinet colleague Badal Choudhury when the latter wanted to fight corruption, Chief Minister had replaced him as the Finance Minister".
"I feel Mr Sarkar has been the master mind of several wrong doings in the state including in relation to corruption cases," Sen told UNI here.
In fact, a section of women vegetable sellers on highway between Manu and Kumarghat seems to endorse such feelings and blame the Chief Minister for allowing "lot of lawlessness and corruption".
"If BJP comes to power, may be things will change. But CPI-M is a cadre based party and they continue to enjoy good support base in rural areas," says Vishaki Jaymat, an housewife. UNI
