Srinagar, Feb 10: Life remained affected due to strike for the third day consecutive day on Saturday in south Kashmir’s Shopian, where people are protesting against the arrest of two youth by police on January 7 night for their involvement in stone pelting.
Announcements were made through public address system from mosques last night, urging the people to continue strike on Saturday against the arrest.
On January 8, a strike was observed on the call by locals, while yesterday it was on the call by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik on the fifth death anniversary of Afzal Guru, who was hanged and later buried in Delhi’s Tihar jail on February 9, 2013 for his involvement in Parliament attack in 2001.
Restrictions imposed in the Shopian town on Friday to maintain law and order were lifted. However, shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads.
Tuition and coaching centres also remained closed in the town. People are demanding release of both the youths from the detention. UNI
