Agartala/Shillong, Feb
17: Immediately after the on-going elections in three northeastern states
of Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland, the centre will give a major boost to
industrialisation and entrepreneurship among the youth in the region and this
will be in line with BJP’s election promises too.
“Job creation is a major election issue in all the three-poll
bound states and the rest of the northeast. Keeping this in mind, the central
government has already recast the 2007 version of the North East Industrial and
Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP) and it will be released by March 10,” a
key BJP source told.
One principal facet that is being added to the policy, which was initially created under UPA regime, will be provisions for ‘cheaper financing’ to encourage first generation entrepreneurship. “Jobs remain a problem in the north east. In Tripura alone out of an estimated 38 lakh population, there are eight lakh unemployed youth. But entrepreneurship drive is also lacking in the region chiefly due to the reason of finance,” the source said adding the new NEIIP will try to address this issue and it will be also linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much talked about Make-in-India and Stand Up India schemes.
While Tripura goes to the polls on Sunday (Feb 18), voting in Meghalaya and Nagaland will take place on February 27.
The BJP sources in Meghalaya and Tripura maintain that out of interaction with intellectuals, youth bodies and other stake holders, the party leadership has urged the government to develop an updated database on the skilling gap existing in the region.
According to BJP leader Bishwabandhu Sen, also the party candidate from Dharmanagar in Tripura, there is a need for taking steps both at the state and the central level for encouraging innovation, research and development and the BJP leadership has already asked various party machineries to start working in these endeavours.
Similarly, BJP leader in Meghalaya, Billykid A Sangma says, there ought to be measures to market hubs like Tura in Garo Hills and other such centres in the northeastern states to be identified and promoted as Startup Platforms for the young entrepreneurs.
“The overall entrepreneurship scenario must change and the BJP government in the centre under Prime Minister’s personal supervision is working in these lines.....Only BJP can deliver,” says Mr Sangma.
According to BJP sources, the Union Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu has already held necessary consultations with officials and others and the revised NEIIPP will be released seeking to address these issues keeping in mind the party’s commitment to create job avenues.
Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader from Assam, Kabindra Purkayastha says the Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal has rightly created Act East Policy Affairs Department in Assam and other states can emulate this roadmap to boost trade and commerce with other countries in the ASEAN region and also with Bangladesh and Nepal.
The BJP leaders in Meghalaya and Tripura also agree that under Act East Policy of the centre, efforts should be made in coordination with the state governments in the region so that connectivity, enhanced trade volume and employment generation get priority focus.
“Keeping all these issues in mind, we have been emphasising that there is need for BJP and BJP-associated governments for better and effective coordination so that such policy initiatives can yield desired results at faster pace,” says Meghalaya BJP leader Billykid Sangma. UNI
