Abu Road, Feb 26: Former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo has asserted that Indo-Nigerian
relations were prospering in various fields and was optimistic of further
strengthening of ties between the two countries.
The former Nigerian President on Sunday told that Nigeria was overwhelmed by the support from India to Nigeria in the fields in agriculture, defence, trade, healthcare, education and infrastructure.
From the data available with the Ministry of External Affairs, in 2016-17, the bilateral trade between the two countries touched 9.4 billion dollars, largest from India with an African country.
Mr Obasanjo said both countries are also working together in training soldiers for advance military operations.
In January this year, India and Nigeria celebrated 60th year of diplomatic relations.
China, which keeps an eye on going in India's relations with other countries, has too invested heavily in Nigeria.
Nigeria-China relations are too strengthening with the bilateral trade between the two countries in 2016-17 reaching 13.78 billion dollars, almost 4.5 billion dollars more from India-Nigeria.
Mr Obsanjo told UNI that China too has invested money in Nigeria in infrastructure development, information technology and agriculture.
China had extended support to Nigeria in Mambilla Power Plant, the Lekki Deep Seaport and the Lagos-Calabar coastal railway.
The 80-year-old former president expressed sorrow for the existing Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, low level of education among his countrymen and the poor health care facilities.
The militant organisation Boko Haram in northern Nigeria, has killed more than 20,000 people and forced two million to flee their homes in a violent insurgency that began in 2009.
The former President, while addressing the ongoing five-day Brahma Kumari International Conference here in Shantivan ashram as chief guest, appealed to the international community to come together and establish peace in the world.
"If half of the money spent on fighting wars is spent on humanitarian crises, enduring peace could be established in the world,' Mr Obasanjo said.
He said the World Health Organisation (WHO) in its report has said that in Africa, 44 countries are suffering from humanitarian crisis, while 11 others were under the grip of some epidemic or disease.
"This is a humanitarian crisis. With such disastrous condition, there can be no happiness. Yet, God has created Africa, Asia and in fact the entire world, to be embraced with peace, joy and happiness," he said.
The former president believed that with spiritual knowledge, a different world order could be established.
The Brahma Kumari International Conference, which began on Friday, is witnessing presence of eminent persons from various walks of life. Talks on spiritual knowledge are being held in the conference, along with the cultural programmes, showcasing the rich Indian culture. UNI
