New Delhi, Feb 26: Keen to wrest power in the southern state of Karnataka, the BJP is now likely
to project few achievements of its rule in Madhya Pradesh and propose to woo
voters by demonstrating the good works done in cities like Indore.
"Our city Indore is Number one under Swachh Bharat
Mission. Like our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said number of times if
small things are taken care of, we can achieve. Indore has achieved it. We are
cleanest city and also bin free. Karnataka voters can always achieve this for
their towns. I am from BJP and so I will say all Karnataka voters should also
vote for BJP," says Malini Gaur, Indore Mayor.
BJP sources told efforts would be made to spread the line in Karnataka that "good governance elements" in Shivraj Singh Chouhan-ruled Madhya Pradesh and the Swach Abhiyan in Indore can be implemented in the southern state also - if the saffron party gets another chance to bounce to power.
In fact, the BJP first came to power in Karnataka in 2008 but the five-year tenure saw infighting and the state government got embroiled into corruption related controversies.
This year, apparently, the BJP's moves to woo voters in Karnataka - where elections are now due by April-May - by projecting 'good works' done in Madhya Pradesh come amid hints that the saffron party has not quite succeeded in turning the anti-incumbency in the Congress-ruled Karnataka in their favour.
"There are still lot of ground to cover.....if we make gains in few pockets and sections of voters, the other sections seemed to turn against. In such a scenario, we need to project good governance. The best practices of 'good governance' in one of our states can be emulated in others. That is the idea behind," said one party leader.
Achieving Number 1 ranking for Indore was not a mere cakewalk as lot of hard work and planning had to be put on.
The 'Cleanest City' award in Swachh Survekshan 2017 for Indore actually was largely seen as a pat for the city's Municipal Corporation, the Mayor Ms Gaur and thousand of corporate workers' tireless journey to make the city a 'role model' for cleanliness, sanitation and waste management.
Prior to that in December 2016 - after a series of initiatives including enforcement of discipline among Safaimitras (cleanliness and sanitation workers) and door to door collection of wastes, Indore also achieved the milestone of being country's only 'Bin free city'. "Our city is also hoarding free," says Mayor Ms Gaur.
"Sustained works, effective planning and leadership from the Mayor Ms Gaur and support of the state Chief Minister have helped achieve Indore city offer a complete a new face of the city in mere three years time.
Our achievements here show if sincere works are done and proper use of technology is made and people's involvement is ensured, any Indian city can become Indore. And it is doable," says Asad Warsi of Eco Pro Environmental Services, consultant to the Indore Municipal Corporation.
In order to highlight the good works of BJP government in Madhya Pradesh to the electorate in Karnataka, besides Indore's cleanliness drive, other works like water management and Narmada-Kshipra Sangam project would also be highlighted.
The Narmada- Kshipra water has proved lifeline for Malwa region and has benefited over 20 villages and the confluence spot has been developed as a sacred spot.
The BJP poll strategists for Karnataka say water and river management remain challenges in the southern state too and hence successful experiments in Madhya Pradesh will always come handy to strike chord with the rural people.
It goes without saying that the the river-linking scheme was framed under the Atal Behari Vajpayee government so that no farmer would remain devoid of water for agriculture.
In Karnataka, administrators and policy makers have been also talking about river linking works related to Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery - to ensure adequate water supply in parched areas. UNI
