SAMBA, SEPTEMBER 07: Krishi
Vigyan Kendra Samba, under the aegis of Directorate of Extension,
Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies Jammu
(SKUAST-J), organised series of activities to celebrate the National Nutrition
Week.
The week long celebrations held at Arazi, Samba witnessed participation
of a large number of adolescent girls and women. The theme of the National Nutrition Week for 2017 was "Optimal
Infant & Young Child Feeding Practices: Better Child Health". The
basic objective of this event was to intensify awareness generation on the
importance of nutrition for health which has an impact on development,
productivity, economic growth and ultimately National development. The
programme was conducted under the supervision of Dr R.K.Arora,
ADE(KVKs) SKUAST Jammu.
The valedictory function started with the introduction of Krishi Vigyan
Kendra by Dr Vinod Gupta, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK Samba. He discussed the
mandate and functions of KVK as an institute for development of the farming
community. He urged that cooperation and coordination of stakeholders was very
important to make people aware about the different projects of KVKs.
Dr Neerja
Sharma spoke about integrated nutrition diet for women. She also laid emphasis
on nutrition which is an issue of survival, health and development for current
and succeeding generations. She informed the participants that Child born
underweight have impaired immune function and increased risk of diseases such
as diabetes and heart diseases in their later life.
Dr Sanjay Khajuria underlined that improving the nutritional status of
the population is imperative for National Development. “Malnutrition
among young children continues to be a major public health problem in India.
Dr Shalini put thrust on keeping check on malnutrition which is not to
be viewed merely as an offshoot of poverty but as a national problem that
results in loss of productivity and economic backwardness.
