New Delhi, Jul 21: Congress president Sonia Gandhi today invited proposals for the 30th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for 2015-16. According to Member Secretary of the Advisory Committee for the Indira Gandhi award for national integration Motilal Vora, Ms Gandhi, who is also the chairperson of the committee , has invited proposals for the award latest by August 31 in the prescribed proforma. The 30th award for 2015-16 would be for the recognition of the outstanding contribution to the cause of national integration in that year and two years immediately preceding it. The award, instituted by the Congress in its centenary year in 1985, aims at promoting national integration, understanding and fellowship amongst religious groups, communities, , ethnic groups, cultures, languages and traditions of India and also to strengthen through thought and action the nation’s sense of solidarity. Given on the occasion of the Martyrdom day of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, the award carries a citation and cash amount of RS 10 lakh to be given either to an institution or individual for outstanding contribution made to promote National integration. The previous recipients of the award include Swami Ranganathananda, Ms Aruna Asaf Ali, Mr P N Haksar, Ms M S Subbulakshmi, Mr Rajiv Gandhi (posthumously), Sardar Beant Singh (posthumously) and Mr Natwar Thakkar (jointly), former Presidents A P J Abdul Kalam and Shankar Dayal Sharma (posthumously), Indira Gandhi Centre for National Integration (Shanti Niketan), noted writers Javed Akhtar and Gulzar, filmmaker Shyam Benegal and Dr M S Swaminathan.
