Commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland today announced that it has entered into a strategic alliance with the Bengaluru-based SUN Mobility to develop electric buses with 'swap and charge' battery technology, involving an investment of Rs 100 crore by both the firms.


Chennai, July 18:  Commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland today announced that it has entered into a strategic alliance with the Bengaluru-based SUN Mobility to develop electric buses with 'swap and charge' battery technology, involving an investment of Rs 100 crore by both the firms. Both the companies would decide on firming up the agreement into a JV, Ashok Leyland CEO and MD Vinod K Dasari and Chetan Maini of Sun Mobility told reporters here. Without divulging the quantum of investment the Bengaluru firm would make, Maini said his company would set up battery charging and swapping stations and others. The advantage of this technology being developed was to replace a battery that got discharged with a fully charged one so that a vehicle was always on the move. Mr Dasari said the initially, the focus would be on city transport sector and talks were being held with State Transport Undertakings. Mr Maini said the charging stations to be set up by his firm would predominantly be powered by renewable energy and would refuel a vehicle at a cost lower than the conventional fuel. UNI
