Chennai,

has entered into a strategic alliance with the Bengaluru-based SUN Mobility to
develop electric buses with 'swap and charge' battery technology, involving an
investment of Rs 100 crore by both the firms. Both the companies would decide
on firming up the agreement into a JV, Ashok Leyland CEO and MD Vinod K Dasari
and Chetan Maini of Sun Mobility told reporters here. Without divulging the
quantum of investment the Bengaluru firm would make, Maini said his company
would set up battery charging and swapping stations and others. The advantage
of this technology being developed was to replace a battery that got discharged
with a fully charged one so that a vehicle was always on the move. Mr Dasari
said the initially, the focus would be on city transport sector and talks were
being held with State Transport Undertakings. Mr Maini said the charging
stations to be set up by his firm would predominantly be powered by renewable
energy and would refuel a vehicle at a cost lower than the conventional fuel.
